Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

Each time a prominent prize-giving event draws close, one notices an outcry for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category during that awards season
  • Another creative title missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent modest productions, however the design behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
